The former harbour town of the Champa people at the estuary  of the Thu Bon river was an important Vietnamese trading centre in the 16th  and 17th centuries, where Chinese  from various provinces as well as Japanese, Dutch  and Indians settled down. During this period of the China trade, the town was called Hai Pho (Seaside Town) in Vietnamese. During the French colonial period (1883-1945), it was called Faifo. Originally Hai Pho was a divided town, because across the "Japanese Bridge", it used to be the Japanese settlement (16th-17th century). The bridge is a unique covered structure built by the Japanese, the only known covered bridge with a Buddhist pagoda attached to one side.

In 1999, the old town was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) as a well-preserved example of a Southeast Asian trading port of the 15th to 19th centuries, whose buildings display a unique blend of local and foreign influences

(Bridge Pagoda): Hoi An officials have chosen the Chua Cau or Bridge Pagoda as the historic city’s main symbol. The central Vietnamese town is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

(Kim Bong Carpentry Village): is very famous for its wood-carving products. Now in this village, there is one Workshop funded by UNESCO in order to train young people in the village.

(Thanh Ha pottery village):Its was the Thanh Ha villagers who made the bricks, tiles and floor slabs for the old buildings in Hoi An and the surrounding areas. The Thanh Ha potters are still working in the same way as their forefathers. With their clever and skillful hands, they turn clay into pretty flower vases, tea pots, piggy bank, wine bottles, water jars, kettles, cooking pots, or lovely ornaments of birds, turtles, buffaloes, cats and ducks. Nowadays many old buildings in Hoi An need restoring and the Thanh Ha villagers are the only contractors that can provide standardized bricks, tiles and floor slabs exactly like the ones when the old port town prospered.

Day 3: HOI AN   HUE (B/L/D)
Breakfast in hotel. Coach trip to Hue. A scenic drive to the former Royal city Hue, over Hai Van pass where a spectacular panorama of the central coastline can be viewed from the summit. End the day with a walking trip through the Imperial Citadel built in the early 19th century. After, free shopping at Dong Ba market. Dinner at restaurant and overnight in Hue

(Royal city Hue): Based on the ancient practice of geomancy, the Citadel was designed and planned around the natural elements in the area north of the Perfume river. The complex faces southeast, taking Mount Ngu Binh (Royal Screen Mount) as a natural screen. Two islets in the Perfume river, Ta Thanh Long (Left Green Dragon) and Huu Bach Ho (Right White Tiger) play the role of sentinels for the Citadel. The construction of the Citadel took place from 1805 to 1832.

(The tomb of Tu Duc): is situated on Duong Xuan mountain in Duong Xuan Thuong village, on the bank of the Perfume river, 8km from the centre of Hue. The construction started in 1864 and was completed in 1883.  Also called Tomb of Modesty

(The tomb of Minh Mang): The construction of the tomb of Minh Mang started in 1840 and was completed in 1843. It is located in an enclosed hilly area of 18ha in Cam Khe village, 12 km from the centre of Hue.

(The Imperial City): in Hue is a walled fortress and palace in the former capital of Vietnam. It was intended to be a copy of the Chinese Emperor's Forbidden City in Beijing, China.
The grounds were surrounded by a wall 2 kilometers by 2 kilometers, and the walls were surrounded by a moat. The water from the moat was taken from the Huong River (Perfume River) that flows through Huế. This structure is called the citadel. Inside the citadel was the Imperial City, with a perimeter of almost 2.5 kilometers.Inside the Imperial Citadel was the imperial enclosure (called the Purple Forbidden City in Vietnamese, a term that mimics that used by the Chinese for their own forbidden city). The enclosure was reserved for the Nguyen royal family. Interestingly, this is the same name that the Chinese gave to their palace complex, the Forbidden City. Like its Chinese counterpart, Vietnam's Purple Forbidden City included many palaces, gates and courtyards

(Dong Ba market): in Old Hue is near the place where the Dong Ba Canal joins the Perfume River. This market is strongly recommend to anyone with an interest in Vietnamese food or culture. The maintenance of ancient characteristics makes an unforgettable impression to visitors
